Owens wins triple jump as Tigers impress in Jackson

JACKSON, Miss. – The Stillman track and field teams took part in the Belhaven Invitational on Saturday, turning in strong performances across the board. Senior Carey Owens highlighted the day for the Tigers after taking home the individual crown in the triple jump.
 
Owens won the event with a mark of 13.88m (45' 6 ½") on his final attempt of the day, while teammates Kentrell Bonner (13.22m/43' 4 ½"), Kenneth Richardson II (12.22m/40' 1 ¼") and Con'darius McCorvery (37' 3") gave Stillman four of the top ten finishers. Caleb Washington also had a strong day in the men's field events, taking fourth (11.92m/39' 1 ¼") in the shot put, ninth (29.90m/98' 1") in the discus and ninth (19.23m/63' 1") in the hammer.
 
Demetrius Williams  (19.00m/62' 4") followed in tenth place in the hammer, matching his best placing of the season. Owens (6.08m/19' 11 ½") also led the Tigers with a 14th-place performance in the men's long jump, with Cameron Washington (5.77m/18' 11 ¼"), McCorvey (5.60m/18' 4 ½") and Richardson (18' 3 ¼") rounding out the field for Stillman.    
 
On the track, Cameron Washington (11.26) took 15th in the men's 100 before following with a 13th-place finish (22.67) in the 200. Owens followed in 16th in the 200, doing so with a time of 22.90, while McCorvey was Stillman's lone representative in the men's 400, turning in a time of 56.16.
 
Freshmen Majesty Folds (2:12.59) and Pattrezzes Myles (2:13.67) took part in the 800, with the latter turning in a season-best time. Folds (4:49.98) and Myles (4:53.89) led Stillman in the 1500, followed by Jordan Lewis (5:16.42) and Meshack Barkutwo (5:49.58).
 
The men's 4x100 relay team of Owens, McCorvey, Cameron Washington and Bonner combined for a time of 42.24, good enough to pick up fifth place.
 
On the women's side, Kerrigan Clark (13.44) took 12th in the 100 before adding a 16th-place finish (3.90m/12' 9 ½") in the long jump on her second attempt. The women's shot put saw a trio of Tigers land in the top nine spots, as Taylor Hopgood (10.53m/34' 6 ¾"), Kaitlyn Owens (9.77m/32' ¾") and Sendia Cobite (9.39m/30' 9 ¾") took fifth, eighth and ninth respectively.    
 
Cobite (34.43m/112' 11) added a fourth-place finish in the women's discus, with Owens (23.19m/76' 1") taking ninth in the same event. Cobite's final event was the hammer, where she took home seventh behind a mark of 25.76m (84' 6"), followed by Hopgood (18.32m/60' 1") in tenth.
 
The Tigers are back in action on Thursday, when they head to Birmingham to participate in UAB's Spring Invite.
