Maiyo, Kurui Run Top 20 at SSAC Championship

OAKVILLE, Ala. -- Freshman runner Noelyne Maiyo led Stillman College with a Top 15 finish to earn All-Conference honors at the Southern States Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Championship on Nov. 4 at the Oakville Indian Mounds course.

Maiyo finished her freshman campaign with a collegiate personal record time of 20:02.5. She shaved 46.8 seconds off her last time on the course in October and dropped 1:51.5 over the course of the season.

Sharon Kurui also ran a PR in her first SSAC Championship meet, finishing 20th individually. It was a 39 second improvement from the season opener in September.

Stillman finished seventh of nine teams in the championship.

"I'm happy for the young ladies. We finished seventh and didn't come in last. That's a good improvement for our women's team. Our team is young, and most of them are sprinters, when it comes down to Noelyne and Sharon, they were competitive. Overall, there was improvement. It's only up from here, and I'm looking forward to what they will bring this upcoming track season," said Ashley Curry, Stillman's head coach.

The team's only senior, Kamryn Harris, ran a 28:55.98 54 in her only meet of the 2022 season. Kiera Fuqua-Brown was four positions back with a time of 31:58.34 58. Malisha Whigham, Malisha ran a 32:54.32 60, and Quenesha Bruno ran 33:12.05 62.

William Carey University won the team championship in both the men's and women's races. The Crusaders were led by DI transfer Lina May, who won the race with a meet record 16:48.8 time in the 5K.
