TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Tennessee Southern used a strong first half to pull away from Stillman women's basketball, 71-51, Monday evening at the Curry Athletic Complex.
The Tigers (6-6) were led by Jaida Minter's 10 points, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers. Stillman also got steady production from Tanyah Lockhart and Chayce Matthews with eight points apiece, while Tyeesha Slaughter added seven points and six rebounds. Jayla West Young paced the offense with five assists.
Stillman struck first and briefly held an early edge, but Tennessee Southern (11-4) responded with a 19-12 advantage after one quarter and continued to build separation in the second. The Firehawks outscored Stillman 26-13 in the period to take a 45-25 lead into halftime.
The Tigers continued to compete on the glass throughout the night, getting eight rebounds from Jordan Harris and five more from Lockhart. Stillman also generated chances in transition with 12 fast break points and finished with 30 points in the paint.
After Tennessee Southern extended its advantage in the third quarter, Stillman closed the game with its best stretch on both ends. The Tigers won the fourth quarter 18-12, sparked by Matthews' perimeter shooting and a strong defensive effort that produced nine steals as a team. Lockhart recorded three steals, while Minter added two.
Stillman finished 20-for-60 from the field and 4-for-13 from 3-point range, with the bench contributing 15 points. Tennessee Southern was led by Ashley Dickey's 17 points and 12 rebounds from Ramie Reid.
