Late fourth-quarter push lifts Oakwood past Stillman, 53-42

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Oakwood outscored Stillman 19-9 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 53-42 decision on Saturday night at Ashby Auditorium.

Stillman carried momentum into the final period after trimming the deficit to 34-33 through three quarters, and the Tigers briefly moved back in front when Chayce Matthews knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 36-34 with 9:37 remaining. Oakwood responded with a decisive closing stretch, turning the final minutes into a free-throw and turnover-driven finish as it closed the game on a 19-6 run.

Matthews led Stillman with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Mya Jones added eight points, while Danyjhia Williams posted six points, six rebounds and six assists in a full 38 minutes of work. Jordan Harris anchored the glass with nine rebounds.

Oakwood was paced by Saniya Keys, who finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Kamaria Murray, who scored 12 points to go with four steals. Oakwood also got 10 points from Morgan Bone off the bench as its reserves accounted for 43 points.

Stillman's defense kept it tight most of the night, holding Oakwood to 27.0 percent shooting from the floor and limiting the hosts to 2-of-14 from 3-point range. The Tigers also finished with seven made 3-pointers, compared to Oakwood's two.

The difference came at the stripe and in the turnover column. Oakwood attempted 29 free throws and scored 26 points off 23 Stillman turnovers, creating extra possessions and late-game separation. Oakwood also finished with a 44-34 rebounding edge.

Stillman is now 10-10 overall and 7-5 in conference play, while Oakwood improved to 14-6 and 10-1.
