Volleyball Cruises to Straight-Set Win over Wilberforce

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – After a grueling mid-week match, the Stillman College volleyball team came out firing against the Wilberforce University Bulldogs, and the Tigers captured a 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-21) victory on the road in Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference action.

With the win, Stillman improves to 2-7 on the season and 1-1 in HBCUAC play, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-15 overall and 1-3 in conference competition.

Ava Cameron led the Tigers with 10 kills on a .438 attack percentage and posted a pair of blocks. Raine Patterson posted seven kills on a .667 percentage with two blocks defensively. Brianna Moore finished with six kills offensively and two blocks. Paige Eason rounded out the leaders with five kills and three service aces. Katelyn Lawson posted a match leading four aces.

Domineshia Jones kept the offense moving with 17 assists and finished second on the team with six digs. Zoey Sales led the back row with nine digs.

Stillman took control in the first set after a kill from Cameron pushed the lead to 14-10, and the Bulldogs never came within less than five points beyond that point in the set. Eason finished the opening game with a kill to give Stillman a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-13 set win.

The Tigers led the second game 8-3 after an ace from Lawson, but Wilberforce bounced back to come within 8-7 with an ace from Jamaya Johnson. Stillman then scored nine of the next 12 points in the match to go up 17-10 with an ace from Kelis Conley. After a Patterson kill put the Tigers up 21-16, Wilberforce posted a four-point run to close the gap to 21-20. But once again, Stillman showed resolve, and a kill from Eason put the set away, 25-20.

Then in the third, the Tigers jumped ahead 14-7 after a Bulldog attack error. Wilberforce battled back to come within one point at 21-20 courtesy of a Mycole Solis ace. Stillman took control with four of the next five points to collect a 25-21 game win and a 3-0 match victory.

Stillman College returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 23, in Birthright Alumni Hall against Faulkner University, starting at 6 p.m.
