TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College softball team took care of business to complete the HBCU Athletic Conference series sweep with a 10-2 victory in six innings over Voorhees University Sunday afternoon.
Madison Bubel had a banner day with a 3-for-4 effort with four RBIs and a triple.
Lily Stone and
Avary Lumpkin both recorded doubles, while
Lauren Haskins and
Alex Erwin came away with steals.
Jasmine Wade (7-1) pitched 4.2 innings of relief with eight strikeouts and only two hits allowed.
Faith Byram went 1.1 innings in the start.
Bubel notched her first RBI of the day in the bottom of the opening inning with a single to bring in Lumpkin to go up 1-0.
Voorhees tied the game in the top of the second as Nia Marshall came around to score.
In the bottom of the second, Haskins singled to left field to bring in
Ariana Lopez to move back ahead 2-0. Stone followed with a double to right field for two RBIs as Haskins and Erwin came around for two runs. Bubel then hit a two-RBI triple to left center to bring in Lumpkin and Stone to cap the inning and give the Tigers a 6-1.
The visiting Voorhees Tigers posted another run in the third as Kierra Diggs scored unearned to close the gap to 6-2.
Then in the fifth,
Katelyn Lankford used a sacrifice fly to bring in
Carolyn Carter to reach an 8-2 tally.
The Tigers put the contest away in the sixth starting with
Anna Sullivan notching an RBI-single thanks to Haskins rounding home. Bubel then used a single to right field to get RBI number four to score Sullivan. Carter registered the game-winning hit with a single up the middle to bring Bubel home and secure the 10-2 run-rule victory.
Stillman College returns to action Saturday, March 29, at 11 a.m. in a doubleheader against the second-place team in the HBCUAC in the Dillard University Bleu Devils.
