NEW ORLEANS – In a matchup between the top two teams in the HBCU Athletic Conference standings, the Stillman College softball team grabbed the first win of the series 7-2 over the hosting Dillard University Bleu Devils Saturday morning.
The Tigers struck first in the opening inning when Carter reached on an error on first base, but
Lauren Haskins came around to score.
Dillard responded in the bottom of the first when De'Asisa Davenport scored to tie the game at 1-1.
Haskins put the Tigers back on top in the third with a two-run homer to bring herself and
Alex Erwin in to take a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Trenity Okedele smashed a homer to left field to pull the Bleu Devils within a run at 3-2.
However, Stillman put the game away in the seventh, starting with Haskins being hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, and
Katelyn Lankford trotted in from third.
Lily Stone grounded into a fielder's choice but the play allowed
Karli Davidson to score.
Avary Lumpkin hit a single to left field which enabled Stone and Erwin to score and reach the 7-2 final margin for the Tiger win.
Haskins finished as the batting leader, and the senior went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a home run, and two steals. Lumpkin added two RBIs on 1-for-3 hitting.
Jasmine Wade (8-1) pitched all seven innings and struck out three batters while scattering four hits.
Stillman College, winner of 12 straight games, enters a crucial doubleheader with Dillard University starting at 11 a.m. The winner of the series controls the top of the HBCUAC standings.
