TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The hitting for the Stillman College softball team shined bright for the Tigers as the team defeated Voorhees University 16-1 in five innings in game one, and grabbed another victory in five innings, 10-2, in HBCU Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE - Stillman 16, Voorhees 1
Stillman did not waste time scoring nine runs in the first inning as
Lily Stone laid down a bunt to allow the speedy
Lauren Haskins to score from third.
Avary Lumpkin followed with a single up the middle to help
Lily Stone touch home. Next up was
Carolyn Carter who hit a single for an RBI as Lumpkin came across.
Katelyn Lankford continued the big opening inning with a single to right field to help Carter come in for a run.
Alex Erwin notched an RBI with a single to left field as Lankford came home.
Makyleigh Hollinger got in on the action with a single through the right side to bring in
Karli Davidson. Haskins capped the first with a three-run homer to left center with Hollinger and Erinw scoring on the play to move ahead 9-0.
The Tigers added to the lead in the second, starting with a grand slam from Erwin as Kavidson , Lankford, and Carter came around to push the lead to 13-0. Lumpin hit a single up the middle as Haskins and Hollinger scored to push the lead to 15-0.
Stillman only scored one run in the third with
Madison Bubel scoring on an error in right field to go up 16-0.
Voorhees avoided the shutout in the fifth with Ty'Shemia Bunkley grabbing an RBI to reach the final 16-1tally.
Alex Erwin led the way with five RBIs on 2-for-3 hitting and added a home run, a stolen bases and two runs scored.
Lauren Haskins finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a homer and a stolen base.
Avary Lumpkin recorded three RBIs and a run scored on 2-for-3 hitting.
Jasmine Wade (6-1) pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and only two hits allowed.
GAME TWO - Stillman 10, Voorhees 2
The Tigers put up four runs in the bottom of the first, starting with Haskins hitting a triple and then scoring on an error by the left fielder.
Ariana Lopez reached first on an error as Alex Sullivan scored. Davidson reached on an error, but Lopez scored on the same play. Hollinger ended the inning with an RBI to bring in Lankford and pushed the lead to 4-0.
Voorhees got on the board in the top of the second when Apryl Davis scored on an error to cut the lead to 4-1.
Then in the second inning,
Lily Stone scored on an error Sullivan advanced to second. Lankford smacked a double to left center as Carter and Sullivan scored to move the score to 8-1.
The visiting Voorhees Tigers scored another run in the third where Ty'Shemia Bunkley crossed home plate to cut the lead to 8-2.
Stillman put the game away in the third with an RBI-single from Sullivan to left field to bring in Haskins, followed by a single through the left side by Lumpkin to bring in Stone to reach the 10-2 final score.
Lankford led in RBIs with two while hitting 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Haskins finished 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Carter and Lankford both registered doubles in the second contest.
Lily Stone was credited with a stolen base.
Mackenzie Smith pitched a complete game with two strikeouts and four hits allowed.
Stillman College (19-7, 8-0) will put the current 10-game win streak on the line tomorrow against Voorhees to close the conference series with first pitch set for noon.
