Women’s Basketball Shows Grit in Tourney Win over Dega, 54-50

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After falling behind early in the fourth quarter, the Stillman College women's basketball team persevered through and battled back to defeat an upset-minded Talladega College Tornadoes team 54-50 in the quarterfinals of the 2025 HBCU Athletic Conference Hope Credit Union Basketball Championships Friday night in Birthright Hall. 

Rapid Recap:

Talladega posted a strong start and raced to an 8-2 lead after DeJaria Lewis hit a free throw with 5:25 on the clock. However, the Lady Tigers responded with a defensive-led 10-0 run to go up 12-8 after Raena Suggs nailed a layup with 3:02 to go. The tightly contested first quarter ended with a 14-12 advantage for Stillman. 

The second quarter was all Lady Tigers as Stillman outscored the Tornadoes 11-2 in the period, capped by a layup from Hannah Boykin-Williams to take a 25-14 lead to the locker room. 

Talladega responded in the third quarter and outscored Stillman 20-14 to close the gap at 39-34 when Kameron Johnson drained a jumper with 48 seconds left heading into the decisive fourth.

The Lady Tornadoes closed the gap early in the final quarter after Beautiful Curry banked in a three-pointer to tie the game at 41-41 and free throws from Curry completed the comeback with 4:02 to go with a 43-41 lead for Dega. 

However, the seniors stepped up in the stretch run as Farrah Pearson and Hannah Boykin-Williams, the two longest-tenured Lady Tigers, along with Kashara Preston, scored 13 of the final 15 point, with eight of those points belonging to Pearson. Stillman College hit five consecutive free throws to preserve the 54-50 win.

Notes and Numbers:
-Raena Suggs led the Tigers with 14 points thanks to a 4-for-7 effort from beyond the arc. 
-Farrah Pearson racked up eight of her 10 points in the fourth and added six rebounds and four assists. 
-Jamariah Turner pulled down a team-high nine boards and Hannah Boykin-Williams racjed up four steals. 
-The seven three-pointers by the Lady Tigers was the lowest since the Tigers hit seven in a win over Voorhees on Feb. 13. 

Up Next:
It'll be a quick turnaround for the Stillman College Lady Tigers as the team has the first game of the day at 1 p.m. against Philander Smith University. Stillman defeated Philander 69-45 during the HBCU East/West Crossover in Birthright on Jan. 6.
