HATTIESBURG, Miss. – It was a day of highs and lows for the Stillman College softball team as the Lady Tigers grabbed a 6-1 victory over Georgetown College, but dropped an 8-0 decision to William Carey University in the final contests of the Carey Invite.
Game 1 - Stillman 6, Georgetown 1
The Lady Tigers scored in the top of the fourth when
Lauren Haskins reached on a fielder's choice and allowed
Alex Erwin to score from third.
Then in the top of the fifth,
Makyleigh Hollinger smacked a single up the middle with the bases loaded to bring in
Carolyn Carter to move the score to 2-0.
Stillman then exploded for four runs in the sixth starting with Carter reaching on a fielder's choice for an RBI as
Lily Stone scored.
Karli Davidson followed with a two-RBI double to center field to bring in Bubel and
Chaluncie Denny. Hollinger rounded out the inning with an RBI to bring in Carter to push the score to 6-0.
GC pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth when Kady Dennis reached on an error and Lilli Koch scored to reach the 6-1 final.
Bubel went 2-for-2 in the contest with a walk and a run scored. Davidson recorded a double and
Alex Erwin legged out a triple. Haskins finished with two steals and Hollinger added another steal.
Jasmine Wade (3-0) pitched five innings in the win as the junior struck out three batters and allowed two hits and a pair of walks.
Mackenzie Smith made a relief appearance and worked two innings. Smith recorded a strikeout and allowed three hits and a walk.
Game 2 - William Carey 8, Stillman 0 (5 innings)
The Lady Crusaders scored three runs in the first highlighted by two RBIs from Laila Clark on a single.
WCU went up 4-0 in the third as Magen Caro hit an RBI single to left field.
Then in the fourth, William Carey added four more runs highlighted by a two-RBI double to left center field by Julia Shaw and capped by Shaw scoring on an error to put the Lady Crusaders ahead 8-0 which was held in the final after five innings.
Haskins, Carter and Davidson all registered a hit in the contest with Carter's hit going for a double. Haskins stole her third base of the day.
Faith Byrum (1-4) pitched three innings with a strikeout but allowed six hits, four earned runs and three walks.
Avary Lumpkin threw an inning and allowed three earned runs and a pair of hits.
Stillman College returns to action Wednesday with a home doubleheader against Crowleys Ridge College scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Stillman Softball Complex.
