Softball Drops Both Games in Carey Invite

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The opening day of the William Carey University Invite did not go the way of the Stillman College softball team as the Lady Tigers dropped both contests on the first day of the event. Stillman fell in eight innings to the Georgetown College Tigers and dropped the nightcap to the hosting Lady Crusaders 6-1 Friday night.

Game 1 - Georgetown 2, Stillman 1 (8 innings)

Hits and runs were at a premium for both squads during the contest. However, The GC Tigers scored early in the top of the first when Stevie Shepherd registered a sacrifice fly to right field as Kinley Lucas scored.

It took until the bottom of the seventh but Stillman scored to tie the game when Karli Davidson reached on an error and Lily Stone scored from third to tie the game 1-1.

Georgetown reclaimed the lead in the eighth when Lucus used her speed to score on an error to put GC up 2-1 which held as the final score.

Stone and Madison Bubel both finished 1-for-3 to lead Stillman.

Faith Byram (1-3) took the tough luck loss with two strikeouts but with four hits, three walks and just one earned run allowed.

Game 2 - William Carey 6, Stillman 1

William Carey went to work in the bottom of the first when Albanie Fussell hit an RBI single to center field. Magen Caro later drew a bases-loaded walk to let Laila Clark score.

The Lady Crusaders added to the lead in the second with an RBI double down the left-field line as Harper Dupre scored.

Stillman found its way on the scoreboard when Carolyn Carter reached on an error and Avary Lumpkin scored to cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth.

However, in the bottom of the fourth, Julia Shaw cleared the bases on a three-RBI double to put WCU ahead 6-1 for the winning tally.

Lauren Haskins led at the plate as she went 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Lumpkin scored the run and drew a walk.

Lumpkin (1-1) pitched 5.1 innings in the loss with a strikeout but surrendered seven hits, six walks, and six earned runs. Byrum threw the final 0.2 innings and struck out a batter.

Stillman College returns to action tomorrow against Georgetown College at 10 a.m. and against William Carey at noon. Times were moved up due to the threat of incoming severe weather.
