Box Score TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College women's basketball team watched a second-half lead vanish, but recovered to come away with a 64-57 win over Voorhees University Thursday night in HBCU Athletic Conference action in Birthright Alumni Hall.
The Stillman Lady Tigers (22-4, 15-1) led by seven, 54-47 heading into the final quarter, but watched that lead slowly dwindle after Ty'Shemia Bunkley drained a three to tie the contest at 57-57 with 5:40 to go.
Despite watching the lead disappear, Stillman College showed some resolve down the stretch by holding Voorhees scoreless the rest of the contest while the Tigers went on a 7-0 run. Layups from
Raena Suggs and
Farrah Pearson combined with three free throws from
Jaida Minter helped the Tigers clinch the 64-57 win.
Stillman only trailed briefly in the opening quarter with the latest being a 4-3 lead for Voorhees at the 7:31 mark, but a jumper by Pearson 10 seconds later put the Tigers on top until the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers led 13-10 after the fist 10 minutes.
The second quarter was the most fruitful for both teams as Voorhees outscored Stilman 24-23. The Lady Tigers managed to build a 10-point lead after
Kashara Preston nailed a three with 5:30 on the clock to move the score to 29-19. However, Voorhees cut the lead to one after a three from Bunkley with a minute to go. A free throw from Suggs pushed the lead to the 36-34 halftime tally.
Suggs finished as the leading scorer with 16 points and three rebounds. Pearson posted a double-double thanks to 12 points and 12 rebounds. Minter added 15 points, three rebounds, and three assists, while
Hannah Boykin-Williams rounded out a quarter of double-digit scorers with 12 points, six rebounds, four steals, and four assists.
Stillman shot 40 percent (22-of-55) from the floor, 26.9 percent (7-of-26) from beyond the arc, and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) at the free throw line.
The Lady Tigers are on the road for the rest of the regular season starting on February 18, against Wilberforce (Ohio) University at 4:30 p.m. locally. The contest was rescheduled from January 9 due to a Winter Storm.
