Women’s Basketball Tames Voorhees in Road Win

DENMARK, S.C. – The Stillman College women's basketball team took to the road and defeated the Voorhees University Tigers 68-43 Saturday afternoon in HBCU Athletic Conference action. 

Jaida Minter was on fire for Stillman and finished with a game-high 32 points on 68 percent (13-of-19) shooting including a 4-of-7 effort from beyond the arc. She added six rebounds three steals, and an assist. Leila Henderson led on the boards with eight rebounds and added six points. 

The Lady Tigers (19-4, 13-1) never trailed in the contest and opened the game on a 14-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Minter at the 2:46 mark. Inga Colclough hit the first shot for Voorhees at 1:26 on the clock to move the score to 14-2. Stillman eventually led 17-6 at the end of the first. 

Stillman's lead only got as low as 11 points in the second quarter with another bucket from Colclough to bring the score to 22-11 with 6:28 on the clock. However, as the quarter moved along the Lady Tigers built to a 23-point, 36-13 lead at the half after a jumper from Minter. 

The lead ballooned to 31 points in the third when London Wooley hit a layup with 1:34 remaining as the score read 53-22. Wooley later hit a three as time expired to help Stillman settle on a 56-30 lead after 30 minutes of action. 

Voorhees finally found some relief in the third quarter as the team outscored Stillman 13-12 in the period, but not before Jamariah Turner hit a pair of free throws to put the Lady Tigers up 32 points as the scoreboard read 66-34 with 4:24 left. Stillman played solid defense down the stretch and kept the lead at 25 points for the 68-43 final to secure the road win. 

The Lady Tigers shot 46.6 percent (27-of–58) from the floor, 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from three, and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) at the free throw line. 

With the HBCUAC East Division clinched, the Tigers sit in the pole position for the top overall seed in the Hope Credit Union HBCU Athletic Conference Championships with three games to play. 

Next up for Stillman College is another HBCUAC matchup against Oakwood University in a whiteout. Fans are encouraged to wear white for the game with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. in Birthright Alumni Hall.
