Volleyball Holds Back Wilberforce for Key HBCUAC Win

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College volleyball team battled with the Wilberforce University Bulldogs in an important Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference East Division matchup Friday night. In the end, the Tigers came away with a 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20) win in Birthright Alumni Hall.

With the win, Stillman improved to 4-15 overall and 3-6 in the HBCUAC. Wilberforce fell to 2-21 on the season and 3-6 in the conference.

Ava Cameron led the way with 13 kills on a .458 attack percentage. Katelyn Lawson finished just outside of double-digits with nine kills. Karen White passed 17 assists, and Kelis Conley added 14 assists and added eight digs defensively. Zoey Sales led the back row with 12digs.

In the first set, neither team posted more than three points in a row in the early moments of the game. Once the Bulldogs got up 18-15, however, the Tigers responded with a five-point run capped by a Shelby Morris service ace to put Stillman up 20-18. The Tigers later used four straight points to claim a 25-20 opening set win.

Wilberforce came out strong in the second set and rushed to a 10-4 lead, but the Tigers later closed the gap to 15-15 following a kill from Lawson. The Bulldogs pushed to a 23-19 lead before Still closed the gap to 23-22 thanks to a kill from Brianna Moore. However, Wilberforce scored the two points needed to win the set 25-23.

Stillman raced to a 12-4 advantage in the third following a Paige Eason ace. The Tigers maintained an eight-point lead at 21-13, but Wilberforce fought back to close the gap to 22-19. From there, each team scored three points, giving Stillman a 25-22 win.

The Bulldogs opened the fourth set with a 3-0 lead, but Stillman responded with a 6-2 run, culminating in a kill from Cameron to take the lead. Wilberforce tied the match at 8-8, but once the Tigers took the 10-8 lead following an Eason ace, Stillman never looked back. A kill from Cameron put the finishing touches on a 25-20 set win and a 3-1 match victory for the Tigers.

Stillman's win has all but secured a spot in the HBCUAC Volleyball Championship Tournament as the fourth-place team in the East Division.

Stillman College steps out of conference play Monday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. as the United States Sports University comes to Birthright Alumni Hall.
