TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College volleyball team made senior night one to remember as the Tigers collected a 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-15) victory over the United States Sports University Eagles Monday night in Birthright Alumni Hall against the non-conference opponent.
Stillman moved to 5-15 on the season, while USSU fell to 1-21 overall.
Katelyn Lawson led the match with 10 kills on a .348 attack percentage and finished second on the team with six digs.
Ava Cameron added seven kills, and
Paige Eason added six kills, five digs and four aces.
Karen White led with 11 assists, while
Kelis Conley turned in 10 assists, five aces, five digs and two blocks.
Gracie Fjeldstad led the back row with nine digs, and
Erin Nelson led at the net with three blocks.
The Eagles opened with a 12-8 advantage, but the Tigers closed the gap to 13-12 following a service ace from Conley. Stillman finally took the lead in the opening set following a kill from
Paige Eason to move the score to 17-16. Tigers turned on the gas and allowed only one more point from the visitors on the way to a 25-18 game win.
Both teams battled to a 5-5 score until Stillman scored five straight points to take control of the second set. The lead ballooned to 19-10 following an ace from Lawson, and the Tigers maintained control on the way to a 25-13 win.
USSU held a very brief lead using a service ace to go up 1-0, but three straight points, including a pair of aces from Conley, to take a 3-1 lead. Stillman's lead swelled to 18-9 following an Eagles' attack error. The largest lead came at the end with an Eason ace to bring the match to an end and collect the 25-15 third set win and seal a 3-0 match victory.
Stillman College wraps the regular season and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference schedule with a road contest against Rust College on Wednesday, Nov. 5, starting at 6 p.m. The match was rescheduled from its original date of Oct. 3.
