TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College women's basketball team shook off the first Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference loss of the season, and wrapped the East/West Crossover Tournament with a convincing 69-45 win over the Philander Smith Lady Panthers Monday night in Birthright Alumni Hall Gymnasium.
Raena Suggs led the way with 17 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists. Jamariah Turner posted 15 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Farrah Pearson rounded out a trio of double-digit scorers with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists.
The game featured multiple lead changes early as the squads battled to a near-even first quarter in which Stillman led 15-14 after the first 10 minutes.
However, the middle quarters provided the separation needed for the Lady Tigers to pull ahead as Stillman outscored PSU 19-7 in the second to take a 34-21 lead to the half and followed with a 22-8 advantage over the Lady Panthers in the third to push to a commanding 56-29 lead after three quarters.
The Lady Tigers led by as much as 40 points in the fourth before settling on the 69-45 margin for the home victory to close out the crossover tournament.
Stillman shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the floor, 27.3 percent from three (6-of-22) and an outstanding 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from beyond the arc.
Miracle Thomas led the Lady Panthers with 14 points, while Ashley Kimble posted 12 and Samya Johnson added 10 points.
Stillman College returns to action on the road in Wilberforce, Ohio to face the Wilberforce University Bulldogs on January 9 starting at 4:30 p.m.
