Lady Tigers Handle Tornadoes in Key HBCUAC Matchup

TUSCALOOSA, Ala – It was first place against second place in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletics Conference east division, and first place supplied heat on a cold night as the Stillman College women's basketball team defeated Talladega College 79-50 Tuesday night in Birthright Alumni Hall Gymnasium.
 
The Lady Tigers (14-4, 9-1) were electric from outside with a 54.2 percent effort (13-of-24) from the three-point line. 

Jaida Minter led all scorers with 17 points including a 3-of-5 effort from three. Raena Suggs added 14 points and splashed a team-leading 4-of-6 from outside. Jamariah Turner finished with 12 points and a 3-of-6 effort from three, and Farrah Pearson did her work on the inside with 12 points and six rebounds. Leila Henderson led on the boards with seven rebounds, while Hannah Boykin-Williams dished a team-high eight assists. 

Stillman finished 54.9 percent (28-of-51) from the floor and connected on 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from the free throw line. 

The Lady Tigers never trailed in the contest and started scoring with a three from Turner with 9:01 on the clock. Talladega (6-7, 6-4) battled to tie the contest at 6-6 with a shot from Kiersten Usher. However, Minter responded with a three on the opposite end to go up 9-6 and Stillman never looked back. The lead ballooned to 28-13 at the end of the first. 

Momentum kept up for Stillman as the team built a 20-point lead on two occasions before settling on a 44-29 halftime lead. 

The Lady Tigers maintained pressure in the second half and built a 36-point lead to end the third quarter at 65-33. The Tornadoes outscored Stillman 17-14 in the fourth, but the damage was done as Stillman collected the 79-50 win at home. 

Talladega shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor, 12.6 percent (1-of-8) from three and 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from the line. 

Stillman College returns to action Saturday at home against Rust College in an HBCUAC east division matchup starting at 1 p.m.
