Women’s Basketball Takes HBCUAC Matchup over Rust

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College women's basketball team never trailed and used that momentum to ride to a 63-46 victory over the Rust College Lady Bearcats Saturday afternoon in Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference East Division action in Birthright Alumni Hall Gymnasium.

Raena Suggs led the way offensively with 16 points and added four steals and three rebounds. Farrah Pearson posted a double-double, accounting for 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Tigers (15-4, 10-1) won every quarter with only the first period being truly close in scoring. The squad opened the game on a 9-0 run capped by a pair of free throws from Jaida Minter. Mykaylah Gray finally got Rust (6-13, 5-8) on the board with a jumper. The Lady Bearcats outscored Stillman 13-4 to close the period, but the Lady Tigers led 14-13 when the first 10 minutes concluded.

From there, Stillman pushed to an eight-point lead with 1:04 left in the half after Limaya Batimba hit a layup to make the score 28-20. Kyara Reynoso closed the quarter with a jumper to bring the game to the 28-22 halftime mark.

With seconds left in the third, Minter connected on a jumper to push the score to the 14-point, 47-33 tally, by Talyia Cawthon brought Rust within 12 after a layup moved the score to 47-35 after three quarters.

Rust opened the fourth on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to just five after a pair of free throws from Cawthon moved the score to 47-42. This was as close as the game would be. Stillman closed the game on a 16-4 run to reach the 63-46 final tally.
