Lady Tigers Win Fourth Straight with Victory over Wilberforce

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In a back-and-forth contest in Birthright Alumni Hall, the Stillman College women's basketball team held on to defeat the Wilberforce University Lady Bulldogs 68-65 Saturday in HBCU Athletic Conference action. 

Entering the fourth with a 12-point lead, the Lady Tigers (16-4, 11-1) seemed to have the game wrapped up. However, Wilberforce (7-12, 4-8) chipped away at the lead to pull within three with 49 seconds left at 64-61. 

Jaida Minter hit a timely layup and later free throws from Hannah-Boykin Williams helped to cement the win for Stillman. 

Wilberforce held the lead after the first quarter which featured six lead changes. Dreann Pryce hit a layup to put the Lady Bulldogs up 19-18 with 1:47 on the clock and Constance Chaplin hit the final shot of the opening period to take the 21-18 advantage. 

Stillman battled back in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Bulldogs including nine points in the period from Farrah Pearson. The dominant quarter helped the Lady Tigers take a 40-33 to the half. 

In the third, Stillman built a 15-point lead on two occasions with the last coming on free throws from Raena Suggs with 15 seconds left. A tip in by Dayania Johnson cut the lead to 58-46 heading to the decisive fourth quarter where the Lady Tigers held on for the 68-65 win. 

Pearson was dominant in the paint in the contest as she went 12-for-17 from the floor and racked up 26 points. Boykin-Williams finished with 15 points, five steals, four assists and a pair of rebounds, while Minter added 13 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists. 

As a unit, the Lady Tigers finished 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the floor, 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from three, and 80 percent (8-of-10( at the free throw line. 

Laniya Early scored 14, while Makyla Tucker and Pryce both added 13 points to lead Wilberforce. 

Stillman College returns to action on Tuesday in HBCUAC action on the road against Talladega College and are slated for a 5 p.m. start.
