Women’s Basketball Throttles Talladega in 91-58 Win

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Five Lady Tigers reached double figures as the Stillman College women's basketball team grabbed a 91-58 victory over the Talladega College Tornadoes Tuesday evening in HBCU Athletic Conference action.

Jaida Minter led the ambush with 23 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Frrah Pearson added 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block. Lelia Henderson scored 13 points, while Jamariah Turner and Raena Suggs both added 11 points.

Stillman (17-4, 12-1) only trailed once in the contest and that came early when Kameron Jones splashed a three to put Dega (7-9, 7-6) up 5-2. However, Minter responded with a three-pointer on the next possession to tie the game at the 8:00 mark. Two minutes later, Minter hit another three to put the Lady Tigers up 8-5. The lead ballooned to 13 points to end the quarter after Hannah Boykin-Williams hit a three to put the team up 22-9.

The contest tightened in the second quarter as an early 15-point lead dwindled to four at the end of the quarter as a layup and free throw from DeJaria Lewis moved the score to 36-32 in favor of Stillman going into the half.

However, the second half was all Lady Tigers as Stillman built a 21-point lead after three quarters capped by a three from Henderson to end the period to reach a 65-44 tally after 30 minutes of play.

In the fourth, the Lady Tiger turned up the pressure with a solid defensive effort, but an even better offensive effort as Stillman connected on 76.9 percent (10-of-13) of shots on the way to the 33-point, 91-58 win on the road.

For the game, Stillman shot 60 percent (33-of-55) from the floor, 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from three, and 75 percent (9-of-12) from the free throw line.

Lewis was the only Tornado in double figures with 17 points and six rebounds.

Stillman College returns to action Thursday in a non-conference match-up against the University of Mobile Rams in Birthright Alumni Hall. It's Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day at Stillman and tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
