TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - In the conference where winners thrive, Stillman College women's volleyball defeated Wilberforce University in its first home HBCU Athletic Conference match Friday evening. The 3-0 victory (25-12, 25-19, 25-16) moves Stillman to 1-1 in HBCUAC action and 2-0 at home.
It is the first time Stillman College volleyball opened its home schedule 2-0 in Birthright Alumni Hall since Pam Phillips coached the Tigers to a 20-win season in 2011.Â
Erin Nelson served up an ace for match point, her sixth of the night. Nelson also led Stillman with 14 assists, while
Kelis Conley had 13 assists.
Six Stillman players had multiple kills, led by
Katelyn Lawson's 10 kills, followed by six apiece from
Ava Cameron and Briana Moore.
Paige Eason and
Raine Patterson each had five kills, and
Aeraeonna Manuel had four kills. Eason and Cameron each had a solo block and assisted block. Eason and Powell matched their jersey numbers with eight and seven digs, respectively.
Stillman set its modern NAIA-era single-match record for set assists (32) and service aces (15). The Tigers had 36 kills and 55 total points.Â
Next up is Youth Night, as Stillman College (1-7) will host Oakwood University on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. The Tigers will also be home Thursday, Sept. 19 to host the Tigers of West Alabama on 80s Night at 6 p.m. Â
