Lawson Paces Stillman on Day 2 of Talladega Tournament

TALLADEGA, Ala. - Stillman College women's volleyball showed improvement on Day 2 of the season Saturday at the Talladega College Tournament, despite a pair of non-conference losses to Truett-McConnell University, 3-0, and Life University, 3-1.

Katelyn Lawson had a season-high 10 kills and Erin Nelson collected 15 set assists and nine digs to pace Stillman in its three-set loss to TMU (25-12, 25-22, 27-25). Paige Eason had seven kills. The Tigers steadily closed the gap through the match. Late in the third set, Stillman scored three straight points on match point to tie the match, 24-24, before TMU pulled out the set, 27-25.

Stillman carried its momentum into the next match at noon, winning the first set over Life University, 25-20. It is the first set Stillman has won over a Southern States Athletic Conference team in program's return in 2022. The Tigers rallied from a 20-13 hole to score 12 unanswered points. A block assist and three-straight kill by Ava Cameron pushed Stillman in front 21-20. Kelis Conley served up an ace before Lawson hit a pair of kills to create set point. Cameron and Lawson blocked the final point. Life fought back to win the next three sets though, 25-11, 25-16 and 25-17 to win the match.

Lawson and Cameron each had seven kills in the second match, while Nelson had a double-double 11 digs and 14 assists. Emily Powell led Stillman's defense with 13 digs. 

Stillman College (0-4) will continue its non-conference road swing Tuesday, Sept. 3 with a trip to Tuskegee University at 5 p.m.. It will be Stillman's first trip to Tuskegee since the final NCAA Division II season in 2015. The Tigers will then host Miles College on Sept. 5 for their home opener at 6 p.m.
