TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - A pair of mercy rule victories in Southern States Athletic Conference kicked off the week for Stillman College softball, defeating Point University 9-1 and 13-5 on Friday.
The wins move Stillman (27-5, 11-5 SSAC) into a tie for third in the SSAC with Faulkner University (18-9, 11-5 SSAC), which will come to town Saturday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
Stillman collected 26 hits and had seven extra base hits on the day against Point, including home runs from
Lauren Haskins and
Madison Bubel.
Haskins hit 6-for-8 on the day with two RBI and six runs scored, while
Carolyn Carter hit 4-for-6 with six RBI and three runs scored.
Taylor Roland,
Ivey Moreland and
Katelyn Lankford each had three hits, while Moreland and
Madison Bubel each had four RBI.
GAME 1: STILLMAN 9, POINT 1
Faith Byram (5-4) returned to the win column in the pitching circle with a four-hit, complete-game victory over Point. She allowed one unearned run in the top of the first inning when Ramsey Clark reached on an error at third and scored on a Tia Coleman two-out single.
Stillman scored two unearned runs as part of a five-run bottom of the first inning. After
Lauren Haskins' at bat was extended due to a dropped pop up foul ball, she singled up the middle. The Tigers worked the bases loaded before
Madison Bubel pushed across the first run with a sac fly. After
Bailie Seales was hit by a pitch,
Carolyn Carter doubled to right center field to clear the bases and give Stillman a 4-1 lead. She later scored on a
Katelyn Lankford single.
Carter doubled again in the third inning and scored on a Karli Davidson single. Stillman scored three in the bottom of the sixth to enact the run rule. Haskins beat out a bunt single and later scored on an
Ivey Moreland sac fly. Seales ended the game with a two-run double to left center.
Lankford hit 3-for-3 in her start.
GAME 2: STILLMAN 13, POINT 5
Point jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but
Madison Bubel tied the game with a three-run home run down the left field line in the bottom of the first.
Lauren Haskins followed with a two-run double in the second inning to give Stillman a 5-3 lead.
Carolyn Carter and
Ivey Moreland singled in the next two runs with one in the third and one in the fourth innings.
Point cut it to a two-run game, 7-5, in the top of the fifth inning. After Stillman was held scoreless in the bottom of the fifth,
Jasmine Wade took over in the circle for starting pitcher
Elisabeth Boso (5-0) and shutdown the Skyhawks in the sixth to protect Stillman's two-run lead and earn her first save. She allowed two hits, but a double play ended the inning and left runners on base.
Stillman scored six in the sixth inning to end the game early.
Katelynn Madison beat out a bunt single, followed by one by Haskins.
Taylor Roland had the third-straight Tiger hit to score one run, followed by a Moreland double down the right field line to score two more. Carter the tripled to left to score two. A Karli Davidson sac fly to left scored Carter to end the game, 13-5.
Haskins hit 4-for-4 in the second game, scoring four runs and producing two RBI. Moreland, Bubel and Carter each had three RBI in the game.
Boso allowed five earned runs off nine hits and three walks. She struck out three through five innings.
