WEST POINT, Ga. - Stillman College received a taste of Southern States Athletic Conference softball action Wednesday, meeting first-year SSAC member Point University in a non-conference doubleheader. The Tigers collected 11 runs and 21 hits as they swept the Point Skyhawks, 1-0 and 10-1.
 

Madison Bubel led Stillman with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI on a solo home run, while SSAC Player of the Week Lauren Haskins also had two hits and two runs scored.  


GAME 1: STILLMAN 1, POINT 0

Lexi McCray (2-0) pitched a complete-game, 1-0, shutout against the reigning SSAC Pitcher of the Week Alyssa Burrows to shut down the Skyhawks. McCray allowed four hits and allowed one walk. She struck out two.

Stillman put up six hits off Burrows, including three doubles, one apiece from Haskins, Bubel and Carolyn Carter. Haskins' double to start the game set up a one-out RBI single from Katelyn Lankford. It proved to be the winning run.

The Tigers left five runners on base, including four in scoring position through the game.

Point only had a runner in scoring position once, when Skyle Loften singled to start the bottom of the second inning and advanced to second. McCray used a pair of pop outs and a strikeout to get out of the inning.

After allowing one hit per inning the first four innings, McCray retired the last nine batters to close out the game, including rolling to her left to toss to first for the final out of the game.

No players had multiple hits in the game, as Haskins, Lankford, Bubel, Carter, Ivey Moreland and Anniston Jones each had one hit. Point's hits came from Brooke Burkett, Hannah Phillips, Skye Loftin and Caylee Quarles.


GAME 2: STILLMAN 10, POINT 1

Bubel sparked Stillman's offense with a one-out double in the top of the fourth and scored on a Carolyn Carter double to put the Tigers on the board. Karlie Davidson collected her first Stillman career hit to single in Carter for a 2-0 lead. 

Mackenzie Diaz drove in Point's lone run in the bottom of the fourth. Stillman answered with three more runs in the fifth on a Kaela Boyd RBI squeeze bunt and error, followed by Bubel's solo home run to left-center field. 

An error pushed across a run in the sixth, and the Tigers added four runs in the seventh on a Gracie Fjeldstad RBI walk, a two-run single from Taylor Roland and a bases-loaded wild pitch.

In all, 11 Tigers had hits in the second game, with two apiece from Bubel, Roland and Kaela Boyd. Makyleigh Hollinger and Davidson each had their first hit of the season. 

Elisabeth Boso (1-0) recorded the win with 4.1 innings of work, allowing one run off seven hits and three walks. Faith Byram pitched 2.2 perfect innings to close the game. 


NEXT: Stillman (4-0) is scheduled to host Oakwood University at home Friday, Feb. 9 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at the Stillman Softball Complex.
