Box Score NEW ORLEANS - Stillman Colllege's upset bid of the No. 14 NAIA women's basketball team fell short Thursday evening, as the Tigers were unable to stymie a late rally by Loyola University in a 59-52 loss. The loss snapped a five-game win streak for Stillman.
Tied at 13-13 after a quarter of play, Stillman pulled away to lead 29-25 at the half. The Tigers built a 10-point lead, 39-29, in the third quarter, but the Wolfpack used an 11-1 run to tie the game at 40. A pair of
Farrah Pearson free throws kept Stillman in front before Loyloa tied the game to close the third quarter, 42-42, with an Alisa O'Dell jumper.
Libby Thompson hit a 3 to open the scoring in the fourth quarter and give the Wolfpack its first lead since early in the second quarter. A pair of
Thaniyah Marks jumpers put the TIgers back in front, but it was brief as Sandra Cannady hit a jumper and free throw to give Loyola a 48-46 lead.
Jamariah Turner and
Alexandria Haymon combined for a 6-0 run that gave Stillman a 52-48 lead with 3:30 to play, but that was the end of the Tigers' scoring. An and-one play for Cannady started an 11-0 run for Loyola to close the final 2:30 of action. Another and-one for Taylor Thomas pushed the Wolfpack in front, 54-52, with 2:11 remaining. Thomas scored six of Loyola's final eight points to finish with 13 points. Cannady led the Wolfpack with 16 points.
After losing the lead, Stillman went 0-for-3 and turned the ball over twice as Loyola went 3-for-4 from the free throw line in the final minute.
Marks scored 17 to lead all players, while Turner finished with 12.
Stillman (12-8, 7-6 SSAC) will travel to William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for noon.
