TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Three-straight wins have moved Stillman College to .500 in the Southern States Athletic Conference women's basketball standings. The latest came Thursday night, as the Tigers ran past the Brewton-Parker College Barons, 58-39, to avenge its conference-opening loss to BPC in November.
Stillman's defense held its opponent to the lowest offense production the Tigers have allowed by a conference team in its six years in the SSAC.
Jamariah Turner hit a 3 to give Stillman an 8-7 lead with four minutes left in the first quarter, and the Tigers never led Brewton-Parker back in front. After the Barons tied the game at 10, Turner swiped a steal and drove to the basket to keep Stillman ahead. It was the start of a 13-2 run that carried into the second quarter.
Jordine Moody's offensive rebound and layup before the half held Stillman's lead, 27-18, at the break.
Another Turner 3-pointer gave Stillman its largest lead in the third quarter, 35-21. While Brewton chipped away briefly,
Thaniyah Marks closed the third quarter and opened the fourth with baskets as part of an 18-11 run to the finish.
Marks scored eight points in the final 10 minutes, as Stillman shot 60% from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line in the fourth quarter. Turner added six more points to finish with 17 points, followed by Marks' 12 and eight rebounds.
Farrah Pearson added nine points and seven rebounds.
Danyjhia Williams also had eight rebounds for Stillman, which out-rebounded BPC 46-44.
Madison Evans posted a double-double 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Barons, and Angel McRae led all players with 13 rebounds.
Stillman (10-7, 5-5 SSAC) now sits sixth in the conference standings with one more home game this week and two left in its January home stand. The Tigers will host Middle Georgia State University on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 12 p.m., before hosting Blue Mountain Christian University in a rescheduled game Monday, Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m.
