TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Long-time teammates
Madison Bubel and
Lauren Haskins, both juniors from Alabaster, Alabama, have been selected to Southern States Athletic Conference's 2023 Barnes & Noble College Softball Scholar-Athlete Team. The award is nominated and selected by SSAC sports information directors.
This is the second academic and athletic award for Bubel this week, also being named to the Academic All-District® Team, selected by College Sports Communicators, on May 16. The SSAC award is a conference model of the CSC honor, highlighting starters or key reserve players who have played in 50% of competitions and completed at least 24 hours with a 3.3 grade point average or higher. The CSC honor raises the bar to a 3.5 GPA and 12 months of enrollment at the institution.
Bubel makes the team with a 3.90 GPA, while majoring in mathematics. In addition to being named to the Dean's List, she is a Presidential Scholarship recipient. A First Team All-SSAC selection, Bubel led Stillman with 36 RBIs, while hitting .331 through 49 games. Her .549 slugging percentage and .419 on base percentage were among the best in the conference. She had 73 total bases with 29 runs scored, leading the team with 14 doubles and adding three triples and three home runs.
Haskins, the SSAC Softball Newcomer of the Year in 2023, boasts a 3.79 GPA while majoring in criminal justice. A First-Team All-SSAC selection, Haskins led set both the Stillman and SSAC single-season record for stolen bases (51), while also leading the SSAC in with a .416 batting average (.461 regular season), 64 total hits, 57 runs scored, .468 on base percentage and .656 slugging percentage. She started 48 of her 49 games played, slugged eight doubles, seven triples and five home runs, including a walk-off winner to advance to the SSAC Tournament semifinals. She had 31 RBIs.
The duo out of Thompson High School combined for 67 RBIs and 86 runs scored during Stillman's historic 36-win season.
Stillman joins Faulkner University, Middle Georgia State University, University of Mobile and William Carey University with two Scholar Athlete selections. Middle Georgia's Beth Eddins was named 2023 Barnes & Noble College Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The junior business administration major finished with a 3.94 GPA and was a First-Team All-Conference pitcher for the conference champions.
Stillman has received eight selections to SSAC 2022-2023 Barnes & Noble College Scholar-Athlete Teams and 13 selections over the past two seasons.
