MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Stillman College designated player Katelyn Lankford is the Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the SSAC office announced Monday.
Lankford, a freshman from Hueytown, Alabama, earned her first weekly honor after hitting .636 (7-for-11) with 10 RBIs, seven runs scored and two home runs last week in four games for Stillman. She hit .778 through her last three games of the week.
Starting at DP for two games against Mississippi University for Women on March 29, Lankford bounced back from an 0-for-2 game to hit 4-for-4 with a double and home run in the second game. She drove in five of the Tigers' runs in the 10-2 win.
On Saturday, she hit 2-for-4 in Game 1 of a SSAC doubleheader against Faulkner University, including two RBIs and a double. She did not start the second game, hoping to come in as a backup catcher, but instead was used as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the sixth inning with the game tied, 2-2. She delivered a three-run home run to left field to give Stillman the lead in a 5-3 win.
Lankford is now hitting .375 (third on the team) through 26 games played and 18 starts.Â
The six wins on the week, including a pair of forfeit wins over Talladega College, moved Stillman College to 26-8 overall, 10-6 in conference. It was the first sweep of a conference doubleheader since 2016 and moved Stillman to its second-most regular season wins in program history with 15 games to play.
Lankford is the fourth Stillman player this season to receive SSAC weekly honors.
Madison Bubel was named the SSAC Player of the Week on Feb. 27.
Lexi McCray earned pitcher of the Week on Feb. 6, and fellow Hueytown-native
Faith Byram (8-1) was SSAC Pitcher of the Week on March 27. Stillman joins William Carey as the only other program to have earned each award at least twice this season.Â
Stillman College will travel to MUW on Tuesday, April 4 for a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m., and then is scheduled to host Blue Mountain Christian University on Friday at 2 p.m.
