TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Stillman College softball slid into a tie for fourth-place in the Southern States Athletic Conference standings after losing a pair of games to No. 13 Middle Georgia State University on Friday, 6-2 and 5-2.
Anniston Jones hit 5-for-6 in the doubleheader to lead Stillman's offense.
GAME 1: No. 13 MIDDLE GEORGIA 6, STILLMAN 2 (8 Innings)
After Stillman surrendered a run in the top of the first inning,
Anniston Jones singled in a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Starting pitcher
Jasmine Wade held Middle Georgia scoreless in the second through fifth innings, but gave up a walk and then a two-out, game-tying double to Summer Lawrence. The Tigers left a runner on in the sixth and seventh innings as the game rolled into extra innings.
Middle Georgia worked the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning. An error on a throw home scored the go-ahead, unearned run. Two more unearned runs scored on sacrifice flies and a fourth unearned run came across on a Addison Renfroe RBI single.
Stillman was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth.
Jones hit 2-for-3 to lead Stillman, while
Katelynn Madison and
Madison Bubel each had one hit.
Lexi McCray (7-7) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs, three unearned, off four hits in the last two innings of work. Wade allowed two earned runs off four hits and four walks in the first six innings. She had two strikeouts.
Madisyn Riggins (11-2) pitched the complete-game win for Middle Georgia.
GAME 2: No. 13 MIDDLE GEORGIA 5, STILLMAN 2
Bailie Seales scored on an error to give Stillman a 1-0 lead in the second inning. However, Middle Georgia worked the bases loaded in the top of the fourth and tied the game on a sacrifice fly. Lauren Heath doubled in a pair of runs to give the Knights a 3-1 lead.
Summer Lawarence added a two-run single in the fifth to stretch the Knights' lead.
Stillman worked the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning and scored on a
Madison Bubel walk. However, three runners were left on base in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Anniston Jones hit 3-for-3 in the game, while
Lauren Haskins was 2-for-4 with one stolen base.
Taylor Roland and Bubel each had one hit.
Faith Byram (9-4) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs through 3.2 innings.
Elisabeth Boso and
Lexi McCray also pitched for Stillman.
NEXT: Stillman (30-14, 12-12 SSAC) will now host Brewton-Parker College (18-20, 8-16) for its final home games on Saturday, April 22 with a 2 p.m. doubleheader. Three seniors will be honored prior to the first game.
