TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - It was a record-breaking day, as Stillman College swept Brewton-Parker College, 9-0 and 3-2, on Senior Day in the Southern States Athletic Conference Series of the Week to close out the 2023 home softball schedule.
Stillman (32-14, 14-12 SSAC) began the day by honoring its seniors (
Savannah Mayes,
Bailie Seales and
Abby Shelby), and closed the day with the program's most wins in a regular season (32). The 2012 Stillman softball team won 31 regular season games as part of a 35-win season.
Not only did the Tigers broke the program's regular season wins record, but
Lauren Haskins stole four bases to break both the Stillman College and Southern States Athletic Conference single-season stolen bases record. January Page previously held the Stillman record with 46 stolen bases in 2011 and Karlee Back (Middle Georgia) previously set the SSAC record with 47 bags in 2022. Haskins now also has the most stolen bases ever by a player at an Alabama-based NAIA softball program. Haskins now has 49 stolen bases on the season.
Anniston Jones led Stillman for the second-straight day, hitting 4-for-5 with two RBI. She hit 9-for-11 on the weekend.
GAME 1: STILLMAN 9, BREWTON-PARKER 0 (5 Innings)
Elisabeth Boso (6-2) pitched 4.1 innings of no-hit softball to earn her sixth win of the season. Boso was perfect, shy of three hit batters. She struck out three.
Abby Shelby pitched part of the top of the fifth inning, allowing the only hit in the combined one-hit shutout.
Lauren Haskins reached on an error and tied the SC record by stealing third to set up a
Katelynn Madison RBI groundout. The Tigers added five runs in the bottom of the second with an RBI walk by
Taylor Roland and two-run Madison single.
Brooklyn Pennington also drove in runs.
Anniston Jones singled in a run in the third.
Madison singled in another run in the fourth inning for her fourth RBI of the game. She scored on an RBI groundout by
Madison Bubel.
Madison and Jones each had two hits, while Haskins, Pennington and
Mackenzie Kirby each had one hit.
GAME 2: STILLMAN 3, BREWTON-PARKER 2 (9 Innings)
All four runs in regulation were unearned in a 3-2, nine-inning battle to close the afternoon. The only earned runs came in the bottom of the ninth inning after
Mackenzie Kirby drew a walk, followed by a
Savannah Mayes double. Pinch runner
Jasmine Wade was held up at third base, but scored the winning run moments later when
Anniston Jones drove a single down the left field line to end the game.
Brewton-Parker took a 1-0 lead in the first. Stillman took its first lead in the bottom of the third, 2-1. Mayes reached on an error to start the inning and moved to second on a Jones sacrifice bunt before scoring on
Taylor Roland's sacrifice fly. After
Lauren Haskins beat out a bunt single and stole second to break the SSAC record,
Katelynn Madison doubled to left to take the lead.
Mayes, Madison and Jones each had two hits in the game.
Brooklyn Pennington and Haskins each had one hit.
Lexi McCray (8-7) recorded the win, allowing three hits and a walk.
Abby Shelby pitched two innings, allowing one run off two hits and a walk.
NEXT: Stillman (32-14, 14-12 SSAC) will close the 2023 regular season on Thursday, April 27 with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Blue Mountain Christian University. The Tigers currently hold a two-game lead over Faulkner University (24-17, 12-12) for fourth place in the conference standings. Faulkner will host No. 15 University of Mobile on April 25.
