HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Stillman College bounced back from a 7-0 loss at No. 19 William Carey University to force extra innings in a 3-2 nightcap loss in Southern States Athletic Conference action Friday evening at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
Lauren Haskins hit 4-for-7 on the day to lead Stillman's offense with a pair of hits in each game.
The losses snapped a 10-game win streak for the Tigers (30-10, 12-8), which remain in fourth place in the SSAC standings, three games behind WCU (31-9, 15-5) and University of Mobile (28-11, 15-5).
Stillman was scheduled to travel to No. 15 University of Mobile on Saturday, April 15, but due to weather, the doubleheader has been moved to Monday, April 17 at 3 p.m.
GAME 1: No. 19 WILLIAM CAREY 7, STILLMAN 0
Hailey Nations (11-4) pitched a two-hit shutout to lead William Carey (31-9, 15-5) in the first game, allowing only three Stillman base runners.
Katelynn Madison drew a one-out walk in the top of the first inning. She was the only Stillman base runner until
Lauren Haskins singled to start the fourth inning. Haskins also singled to start the top of the seventh, and stole second for her 42nd stolen base of the season. She was 2-for-3 from the plate and 1-for-2 in stolen base attempts in the game.
WCU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off
Lexi McCray (7-6) and
Jasmine Wade. The Crusaders added two runs in the second and an unearned run in the fifth off Wade, who struck out five batters through four innings of work. WCU added two more runs in the sixth inning off
Elisabeth Boso, who pitched the final 1.2 innings.
GAME 2: No. 19 WILLIAM CAREY 3, STILLMAN 2 (8 Innings)
Faith Byram and Ryanne Hornsby (16-4) were locked in a pitchers' duel throughout the eight-inning nightcap.
WCU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Carley Kidder RBI triple and Susie Lebert RBI single.
Stillman immediately answered in the top of the fifth inning.
Savannah Mayes reached on a one-out single to center, followed by a
Taylor Roland single.
Sara Kate Nichols ran for Mayes and scored on an error after
Lauren Haskins beat a bunt single to load the bases.
Katelyn Lankford then tied the game with a ground out RBI to score Roland.
The Tigers left one runner on base in six of the eight innings played.
WCU loaded the bases with three singles in the bottom of the eighth on a wild throw from center field after a fly out.
Byram (9-2) allowed three runs, two earned, off eight hits. She struck out two through 7.1 innings.Â
