MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - Stillman College bounced back from a 3-1 loss in Game 1 to beat Brewton-Parker College, 6-1, and split its Southern States Athletic Conference softball opener on Saturday.
Lauren Haskins had three hits on the day to lead the Tigers, while
Madison Bubel drove in four runs to power Stillman's offense in Game 2.
GAME 1: BREWTON-PARKER 3, STILLMAN 1
A pair of errors in the bottom of the fourth helped Brewton-Parker College take the first game against Stillman College in a pitchers' duel. Tripp was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on an error as part of an infield hit by Josalin Whitten. MacKenzie Tripp scored on a sac bunt. Two batters later, Skyler Strickland reached on a one-out error and then Cailyn Snellgrov scored on a ground out as Brewton-Parker took a 3-0 lead.
Mackenzie Kirby broke up a perfect game with one out in the top of the fifth, but Stillman was unable to push across a run.
Anniston Jones busted up the no-hit bid to lead off the sixth inning and later scored on an infield hit by
Lauren Haskins. The last five Tiger batters were retired in order.
Lexi McCray (4-2) was charged with the loss, allowing one earned run off two hits, two walks and two hit batters. She struck out five. Laykin Brown had the win for Brewton-Parker, allowing one run off two hits and a walk. She struck out one.
GAME 2: STILLMAN 6, BREWTON-PARKER 1
Stillman scored three runs in the third and three in the fourth to erase an early 1-0 Barons lead.
Chloe Strickland doubled with two outs in the bottom of the second and scored on a Josalin Whitten single.
Taylor Roland walked to lead off the third and bring the top of the batting order around.
Lauren Haskins doubled in a run. After
Bailie Seales was walked and
Brooklyn Pennington was walked to load the bases, Haskins scored on a
Madison Bubel sac fly to give Stillman the lead. A third run scored on a dropped pop up to make it 3-1 after three.
In the fourth inning, Stillman loaded the bases before Bubel cleared them with a one-out double down the left field line.
Haskins, Bubel and
Carolyn Carter each had doubles in the game. Carter and Haskins each had two hits. Bubel drove in four runs.
Faith Byram (5-0) recorded the win for Stillman, allowing one run off two hits and no walks through four innings.
Abby Shelby recorded the save, allowing one hit through three scoreless innings.
NEXT: Stillman (13-3, 1-1 SSAC) will travel to No. 22 Middle Georgia State University on Monday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. EDT. The games were originally scheduled for Friday, but were rescheduled twice due to weather. With the change, the Tigers' home non-conference games against St. Mary of the Woods College have been canceled.
