Stillman WBB Fall to No. 9 Loyola

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Stillman College battled No. 9 Loyola University Thursday night, but was unable to finish a late rally in a 65-53 Southern States Athletic Conference loss at home in Birthright Alumni Hall.

Stillman forced turnovers on the first two Loyola possessions and turned them into points to take an early 4-0 lead.  Loyola broke an 11-11 tie with a 13-3 run to start the second quarter and carried a 33-19 advantage into halftime.

Laneja Warner, who led Stillman with 19 points, scored 10-straight in the third quarter to pull the Tigers within six points, 39-33. The Wolfpack worked their lead back to 10 points, where it remained for the next 14 minutes.

Warner cut it to a nine-point game with a pair of free throws in the final two minutes, and then grabbed a steal on the other end to set up a Farrah Pearson layup. It was 59-53 with a minute to play. However, a pair of Stillman fouls led to four made free throws by Loyola to work it back to 10 points with 30 seconds left in the game.

Amaria Strong followed Warner's lead with 13 points, while Pearson finished with 12 points. Warner led all players with six steals, and JaMesha King led Stillman with nine rebounds.

Loyola was led in scoring by Sandra Canady, who had a double-double 20 points and 13 rebounds. Kennedy Hansberry scored 13 and Taylor Thomas added 11 points.

Stillman (14-10, 6-8) travels to Talladega College on Saturday, Feb. 11 at noon for a makeup game from the fall semester. The two teams will meet again in Tuscaloosa on Feb. 18 for Homecoming.
