TALLADEGA, Ala. - Stillman College out-scored Talladega College, 22-6 in the fourth quarter, including 11-0 in the final five minutes, to wrap up a 62-47 Southern States Athletic Conference road win Saturday. The game, which was rescheduled from Nov. 19, served as a preview of Stillman's Homecoming matchup when Talladega will travel to Stillman on Feb. 18.
Alexandria Haymon paced the Tigers throughout the game, scoring a career-high 22 points and leading Stillman with seven rebounds.
Despite an early 4-2 lead, Stillman trailed for most of the first half. Talladega led 24-19 with 2:31 left in the second quarter, but the Tigers used a 6-0 run to take a 25-24 lead before a Brooklynn Talton tip-in put the Tornadoes back in front, 26-25 at halftime.
Both teams matched points in the third quarter, 15-15.
Alexandria Haymon tied the game at 30 with a 3-pointer. Talladega maintained its lead until
Desiree Tyner put Stillman back on top, 33-32, with 4:50 to play in the third. The lead changed three more times as Talladega went back on top, 41-40, entering the final 10 minutes of action.
The fourth quarter was a different script though.
Laneja Warner drained her only 3-pointer of the game to open the quarter and regain Stillman's lead, 43-41. While Makayla Transou tied it at 43, Stillman scored four-straight to build a two-possession lead. When Dega threatened to tie it again, Haymon hit a jumper and grabbed two defensive rebounds to help set up a Warner layup that pushed the Tigers' lead to six points, 51-45.
Talladega's last points were scored with 5:00 on the clock.
Jamesha King answered with a jump shot that sparked an 11-0 run to the buzzer for Stillman. The Tigers' defense helped force five missed shots and three turnovers by Talladega to create their offensive opportunities.
Warner and
Farrah Pearson each scored nine to follow Haymon's lead. King added eight points and seven rebounds.
Shamya Loman and Transou each scored 13 to lead the Tornadoes. Talladega's Je'Nya Wilder led all players with 10 rebounds.
Stillman (15-11, 7-9 SSAC) holds its spot at sixth in the SSAC standings with two games to play. The Tigers will travel to Faulkner University (20-6, 12-4) on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip, and then will host Talladega (5-18, 0-17) for Homecoming and Senior Day on Feb. 18 at noon.
