Kelcie Smith paced Stillman with 17 points off the bench, three points shy of her career high, as Stillman College defeated Middle Georgia State University, 67-45, in Birthright Alumni Hall. The Southern States Athletic Conference win halted the Tigers six-game losing streak.
MGA took an early lead, but Smith and
Imani Wimbish-Gay hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Stillman a 14-11 lead with 3:13 left in the first quarter. The Knights briefly regained the lead, 16-14, led by five Destanee Wright free throws, but
Korryn Millerton regained the Tigers' lead with an and-one layup and free throw, 17-16. Stillman led 18-16 after 10 minutes of action.
The Tigers' run grew to 8-0 as Stillman expanded its lead to 22-16 early in the second quarter. Middle Georgia used free throws late in the quarter to make it a three-point game at halftime, 31-28.
Stillman opened the third quarter with a seven-minute, 13-2 run to lead 44-30. The Tigers went on to out-score Middle Georgia 36-17 in the second half. An 11-0 run early in the fourth quarter helped Stillman build a 21-point lead, 60-39. Smith scored seven of the 11 points. The largest lead of the game was 24 points after a
Laneja Warner 3-pointer with 1:09 left. Warner finished with 11 points.
Wimbish Gay scored nine points and JaMesha King scored eight, while adding three blocks and five rebounds.
Ke'Asia McKinney led Stillman on the glass with 10 rebounds and
Farrah Pearson had seven. Stillman out-rebounded MGA 41-31.
Wright finished with 11 points and six rebounds to lead Middle Georgia, followed by Lashauna Coley's 10 points.
Stillman (13-10, 6-8) will travel to Life University in Marietta, Georgia, for its next Southern States Athletic Conference game on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 4:30 p.m. CST.
