TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Stillman College women's basketball kicked off Homecoming Saturday with a 67-42 victory over HBCU rival Talladega College in front of a sold out Birthright Alumni Hall crowd. It's the third-straight win for Stillman over Talladega.
The Tigers' defense held Talladega to 12.5% shooting (2-of-16) in the first quarter as Stillman jumped out to a 24-5 lead.
Desiree Tyner scored the first five points of the game to help Stillman to a 7-0 run to open the game. It became a 12-1 start in the first five minutes. Leading by 19, Stillman opened the second quarter with a 13-2 run to lead by 30 points, 37-7, with 6:18 left.
Stillman led 41-17 at halftime.
Talladega raced out of the locker room with a 17-0 run in the first six minutes of the second half to cut the Tigers' lead to seven, 41-34. JaMesha King stopped the bleeding with a basket in the paint with 3:47 left in the third quarter.
The Tornadoes continued to attack, cutting the margin to one point, 44-43, by the end of the third quarter. Dega fought all the way back to take its first lead, 47-46, on a Makayla Transou jumper with 8:21 to play. However, Tyner answered on the other end to regain the Tigers' lead, 48-47. It started a 7-0 Stillman run. After Transou pulled Talladega back with in a basket, 53-51, Stillman closed the final five minutes of action on a 14-1 run.
Farrah Pearson led Stillman with 14 points. King added 13 points and nine rebounds, while starters
Laneja Warner and Tyner each scored 10 points.
Transou paced Talladega with 21 points. Amayla Sharif scored 12 and Je'Nya Wilder added 11 points.
Stillman (16-12, 8-10 SSAC) concludes the regular season as the No. 6 seed in the SSAC Women's Basketball Championship, presented by Newk's Eatery. The Tigers will meet three-seed Brewton-Parker College to close the SSAC Quarterfinals on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. in the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala.
