Strong Second Half Leads Stillman Past BMCU

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. - Stillman College out-scored Blue Mountain Christian University 41-17 in the second half to run past the Toppers, 65-46, in Southern States Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday. 

After a slow first half shooting 6-of-31, the Tigers shot 63% in the final 20 minutes, led by 11 points each from Alexandria Haymon and Farrah Pearson. Haymon led Stillman with 15 points in the game, while Pearson scored 14 and had nine rebounds. 

Stillman capitalized on Blue Mountain's 22 turnovers, including 13 Tiger steals, to score 15 points in the second half and 24 in the game.

Kashara Preston gave Stillman a 5-4 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Toppers led the rest of the first and second quarters. The largest lead was nine points, 24-15, before Stillman cut it to 29-24 at halftime.

Pearson scored six-straight points to open the second half and give the Tigers a 30-29 lead. Haymon capped the eight-point rally with a layup. Stillman did not trail again as it opened the third quarter with a 19-4 rally to lead by 10 points, 43-33, on a Jamariah Turner 3-pointer. A 9-0 rally in the fourth quarter pushed the Tigers in front by 19 points, 58-39. The largest lead of the night was 22 points, 65-43, after Thaniyah Marks and Jamariah Turner each had layups in the final two minutes. 

Turner also scored in double figures with 10 points for the Tigers. She led the defense with five steals. Raena Suggs added seven points off the bench.

Stillman (5-3, 2-2) SSAC will take a two week break from SSAC action to host a pair of Tuesday night home games against Gulf Coast Athletic Conference foes Oakwood University and Rust College on Dec. 5 and Dec. 12, respectively. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. each night.
