TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Opening its first home Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season, Stillman College women's basketball was unable to erase a fourth-quarter hole in a 71-64 loss to University of Tennessee Southern.
Stillman's largest lead of the first half, 7-2, came in the first three minutes of the game. Tennessee Southern built a 9-1 run to take the lead, 11-8, on a pair of Kassidy Broussard baskets. After trailing 16-12 after the first quarter, Stillman fought back to regain its lead following a pair of baskets by
JaMesha King, 18-16. The lead swapped back-and-forth through the second quarter until Larose Morrow hit a 3 entering the half for a 34-29 Firehawks lead.
The Tigers opened the second half on an 11-3 run to lead by eight, 45-37. Six different players contributed to the rally, including 3-pointers by
Jamariah Turner and
Kashara Preston, as well as an offensive rebound and layup by
Alexandria Haymon.
UTS chipped away at Stillman's lead to make it a 47-44 Tigers lead entering the final 10 minutes.
Turner fought off the Firehawks with a 3-pointer and pair of free throws early in the fourth quarter, but Takiyah Goff hit a deep 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to make it a 3-point game, 52-49. UT Southern closed the final seven minutes by out-scoring Stillman 21-12. Faith Eubank accounted for 12 points, hitting three consecutive 3s to flip the Tigers' 57-54 lead into a 60-57 Firehawks' lead. Stillman was quickly down by seven again with less than 90 seconds to play. The Tigers fouled four times and attempted to work back into the game, but Tennessee Southern hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final 30 seconds and were 11-of-14 in the second half after not attempting a free throw the first three quarters of action.
Turner recorded a season-high 18 points, aided by four 3-pointers.
Farrah Pearson finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
JaMesha King and
Thaniyah Marks each scored nine points, and
Danyjhia Williams scored eight. Marks added seven rebounds
Takiyah Goff led UTS with 18 points, followed by Boussard's 16 and Eubanks's 11.
Stillman (4-3, 1-2 SSAC) will go on the road Saturday for a SSAC game at Blue Mountain Christian University.
