Raena Suggs hung 22 points on the Keiser Skyhawks to lead Stillman College to a 68-60 win Friday morning on Day 2 of the Southern States Athletic Conference / Sun Conference Challenge at Cramton Bowl.
The win completes a two-year sweep for Stillman women's basketball in the SSAC/Sun Challenge, as the Tigers move to 5-0 against Sun Conference teams since joining the NAIA in 2016. Stillman is now 2-0 to start the season for the third-straight season. It is the first time in Stillman women's basketball history for the Tigers to start 2-0 or better in three consecutive seasons.
Stillman trailed most of the first quarter, but
Alexandra Haymon gave the Tigers a 13-12 lead with 2:01 remaining in the first stanza. Haymon scored six of eight points to lead Stillman in the opening quarter.
After ending the first 10 minutes tied, 15-15, Stillman fell behind again in the second quarter. Suggs pulled the game even, 29-29 with 1:40 left in the half, swiping a steal and scoring an and-one layup. She then went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final minute and added a 3-pointer with three seconds left to send Stillman into halftime with a 36-32 lead.
It was all Tigers in the second half.
Jamariah Turner did not miss a shot in five minutes of action and scored six points in the third quarter to pace the Tigers' offense. She finished with nine points. Suggs' 12-point fourth quarter sealed the win for Stillman.
Farrah Pearson had a season-high 10 points in the game, while
JaMesha King led the Tigers on the glass with 12 rebounds.
Thaniyah Marks had eight points and eight rebounds.
Keiser had three players score 13 points each to lead the team: Ellaina Schaefer, Halle Traylor and Elise Ellison. Ellison had 11 rebounds and Schaefer had four assists.
Stillman (2-0) will host Voorhees University for its first home game in Birthright Alumni Hall on Monday, Nov. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
