COCHRAN, Ga. - Stillman College pulled even in Southern States Athletic Conference play at 3-3 with a 58-53 road win at Middle Georgia State University on Saturday, Jan. 7.
With the win, Stillman improves to 11-4 overall on the season. The .733 win percentage is the program's best through 15 games since a 12-3 start in the 2016-17 season.
After leading the first three minutes of action, Stillman trailed the next nine minutes.
Korryn Millerton regained the lead for Stillman, 16-15, with a layup at 8:01 in the second quarter. There were three lead changes before Middle Georgia carried a 25-24 edge into halftime.
Amaria Strong and
Farrah Pearson combined for all 14 points scored in the third quarter as Stillman took a 38-32 lead through 30 minutes of action. Strong led Stillman with 13 points in the game and added six rebounds. Pearson finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
The six-point cushion proved vital for the Tigers. Middle Georgia did not get any closer until a Destanee Wright free throw made it a four-point game, 50-46, with 1:10 to play. The Tigers out-rebounded the Knights 36-25, and nearly won the battle on their own glass with 16 offensive rebounds to MGA's 21 defensive boards.
Ke'Asia McKinney led Stillman with 10 rebounds, while also scoring seven points.
Imani Wimbish Gay was third in scoring for Stillman with nine points. Georgia native
Laneja Warner dished out five assists to lead both teams.
Middle Georgia was led by Kassidy Broussard's 13 points and four assists. Wright finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Micaela Mobley scored 10 points.
Stillman (11-4, 3-3) carries a three-game win streak back to Birthright Alumni Hall on Thursday, Jan. 12 to take on first-year SSAC member Life University (11-5, 4-3) in a battle for fourth-place in the conference at 5:30 p.m. Life is currently fourth in the standings with a .571 win percentage, while Stillman and Brewton-Parker College are both tied for fifth at .500.
