Amaria Strong hit a free throw with 0.9 left to give Stillman College a 63-62 victory over Life University in the Southern States Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Game of the Week Thursday night. The win moves Stillman (12-4, 4-3) into fourth place in the SSAC, a half game out of third.
The Tigers are riding a four-game win streak in conference action for the second time since joining the SSAC.
Strong's go-ahead capped a six-minute rally that saw Stillman erase its seven-point deficit.
Stillman's defense forced a turnover by Kierra York and set up a game-tying jumper by Imani Wimbish Gay, 53-53, with 5:36 left in the game.
Laneja Warner gave Stillman the lead at 4:58 left, getting a bounce on a 3-pointer from the top of the key, and drawing a foul on the shot. She completed the 4-point play, 57-53. Momentum remained with Stillman the rest of the way. The Tigers led by as many as six points, 61-55, after
Farrah Pearson scored a layup with 3:47 left.
Pearson later hit a free throw with 1:49 left to keep Stillman in front, 62-59, and cap her career-high 23-point night. She also had four assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Life scored 24 points off second chances, while out-rebounding Stillman 41-26 with 17 offensive rebounds. However, Stillman countered with 25 points off turnovers. Both teams shot in the low 40s from the floor with Life hitting 41.3% of its shots to Stillman's 42.9%.
Strong and Warner finished with 10 points.
Desiree Tyner was the Tigers' leader on defense in the paint with a team-best five rebounds and three blocks.
York led Life with a double-double 19 points and 11 rebounds. Nekiyah Booker scored 12 for the Running Eagles.
Stillman will travel to No. 9 Loyola University (15-0, 8-0) in New Orleans, Louisiana on Saturday for a noon tip.
