Tigers Defeat Brewton-Parker, Remain Tied for Third in SSAC

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Stillman College maintained its third-place spot in the Southern States Athletic Conference standings, defeating Brewton-Parker College, 78-63, in Birthright Alumni Hall on Saturday.

The Tigers jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first five minutes of action, but responded with a 25-8 run over the next nine minutes to take the lead, 29-28, on a Lance Smith 3-pointer. The Barons' largest lead was three points, 31-28, before Jamar Jackson hit a 3 to tie it, 31-31, with 6:01 left in the first half.

Jackson hit 5-of-5 3-pointers and scored 17 points in the first half to pace Stillman to a 43-38 halftime lead. He went on to finish with 22 points.

Derrick Finklea shouldered the Tigers' offense in the second half, scoring all 13 of his points in the final 20 minutes. He added six assists and four rebounds for the game.

Jeffery Huff Jr, who led Brewton-Parker with 18 points, cut the Tigers' lead to three points, 58-55, with 7:41 to play, but Stillman built a 14-4 run to lead by 13 points, 72-59. Brenden Lankford-Johnson hit four free throws in the final minute to ice the game and finish with 11 points.

Khalil Johnson added 13 points, and Marcus Bates narrowly missed a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points.

The Barons had six players score at least eight points. Jeffery Huff Jr led the way with 18 points, and Lance Smith scored 12.

Stillman (13-7, 8-6) will travel to the University of Mobile on Tuesday, Jan. 31 for a 7:30 p.m. tip. Both teams are part of a three-way tie for third after Mobile (15-7, 9-5) posted an 80-77 upset of SSAC-leader Loyola University (17-4, 12-2) on Saturday. Faulkner University (19-3, 11-3) is second in the SSAC. Dalton State College (14-8, 9-5) is also tied for third in the SSAC after defeating Stillman, 63-60, on Jan. 24.
