Stillman Falls Short at Brewton-Parker

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - Stillman College opened the game on a 7-0 run Saturday, but the Tigers' return to action after two weeks away, did not go as planned, falling at Brewton-Parker College, 62-55.

While Stillman shutout the Barons in the first three minutes, Brewton-Parker answered with a 7-0 run to even the score with four minutes left in the first quarter. The Tigers closed the opening quarter on a 6-1 run to lead, 13-8, at the first break.

After tying the game, 15-15, Brewton-Parker later pulled ahead, 17-16, on a Keyanna Tolbert jumper midway through the second quarter. Stillman regained and held a small lead the rest of the first half, until a pair of Madison Evans free throws gave BPC a 26-25 halftime lead.

Stillman out-scored Brewton-Parker 10-2 to open the second half and lead by eight points, its largest lead of the game. BPC took advantage of a 2:20 Tiger scoring drought to pull within a basket, before pulling ahead, 45-41, after three quarters of action.

Brewton-Parker (9-3, 2-2 SSAC) led by as many as six points early in the fourth quarter. Jamesha King scored a jumper with 4:09 remaining to make it a one-point game, 52-51. That was her final basket of the game though, finishing with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Farrah Pearson posted her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with 3:05 to play. Her foul and technical foul followed an Evans basket that gave BPC a 54-51 lead. Sy-Marieona Williams hit 1-of-2 technical foul free throws to make it a two-possession game. The Barons pulled away down the stretch.

Stillman did not score again until the final 41 seconds, when Laneja Warner scored a pair of free throws and added a late jumper to finish with 17 points. Amaria Strong scored nine before fouling out with 5:32 to play.

The Tigers won the rebound battle and led for roughly 60% of the game.

Williams led BPC with 23 points. Evans finished with 13 points, Angel McRae and Keyanna Tolbert each scored nine, with McRae leading all players with 13 rebounds.

The game was Stillman's first Southern States Athletic Conference road trip of the season after its Nov. 19 trip to Talladega College was postponed to Feb. 11. Counting the game Saturday, Stillman will play five games over 10 days to close the fall semester. Stillman (7-2, 0-2 SSAC) will host Southeastern Baptist College on Monday, Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. and Rust College on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 5:30. The semester will end with a road trip to Mississippi on Dec. 10 at William Carey University and Dec. 12 at Blue Mountain College.
