Joel Penfield helped reinstate the Stillman College Women's Volleyball program in 2022, serving as head coach from May 2022 until handing over the reigns to then volunteer assistant coach Emiley Madison on Sept. 25, 2022 to focus more on the softball program. 

Penfield arrived at Stillman College as softball head coach prior to the 2018 season after spending seven years as the girls' Athletic Director at Bessemer Academy. He spent 12 years total coaching at the high school level.

Under Penfield's tutelage, Bessemer Academy girls' athletic program has advanced to the state playoffs each year with a third place finish in 2015. He also coached Bessemer Academy volleyball team. The team went on to win the State Championship in 2013 with five appearences in the final four. Also during his time at Bessemer Academy, Penfield served as assistant football coach on three AISAS state championship teams and was a five-time selection to coach the AISA Volleyball All-Stars and six-time AISA Softball All Star coach.

Penfield has been married to Dawn Penfield for 31 years and together the couple have two children, Jordan and Dalton, and three grandchildren, Jensen, Addison and Jenna.
