FAIRFIELD, Ala. — The Stillman College volleyball team fell to NCAA Division II opponent Miles College in straight sets (25-14, 25-15, 25-11) Thursday night in Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
The Tigers were unable to generate consistent offense, finishing with 19 kills and a .026 hitting percentage. Stillman also committed 17 attack errors and six service errors against a Miles team that hit .308 with 43 kills.
Stillman stayed within two points early in the first set, trailing 8-6, before Miles pulled away. The Golden Bears extended the margin to 17-9 and closed the set 25-14.
Ava Cameron supplied three kills in the set, while
Kelis Conley added a service ace during Stillman's early push.
The Tigers again kept the second set competitive. Stillman trailed 13-10 before cutting the deficit to 14-11, then 15-12. Miles responded with a run that included consecutive service aces and took the set 25-15.
Miles opened the third set with a 4-1 lead, but Stillman answered to tie it at four. The Tigers later pulled within one at 8-9 before Miles regained control. The Golden Bears went on a 9-3 run to build an 18-11 advantage and finished the set 25-11 to complete the sweep.
Cameron led Stillman with seven kills on 16 attacks and added a block assist.
Eva Stewart contributed three kills, five digs and a solo block, while
Makasia Crawford had three kills and two block assists. Conley finished with eight assists, two digs and a service ace.
Stillman showed flashes defensively, recording 25 digs and three total blocks.
Karen White led the Tigers with seven digs, while Stewart had five.
Karea Copeland led Miles with a match-high 18 kills while hitting .406. Aida Edwards added nine kills and hit .538.
Stillman returns to action tomorrow with the home opener against the United States Sports University Eagles. Game time is set for 5 p.m. in Birthright Alumni Hall.
