Tigers Stumble in Series Finale

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman Tigers (12-12, 7-3 HBCUAC) concluded their series against the Rust College Bearcats on Sunday afternoon.

The Bearcats jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning. However, the Tigers got a quick rally going with a leadoff single from Kameran Belser and a walk from Davion Wilkins. Robert Gage reached first on an error by the Rust pitcher to load the bases with no outs.

A sacrifice fly from Matthew Rivers brought home the first run for Stillman, but that would be all that came across.

After a shutdown inning from starter Deuntre Dunklin, Javian Rives hit a single to start the second. He then advanced to second on a wild pitch. A groundout from Daniel Salter moved Rives over to third.

Next up came Gavin Rehorn, who hit a routine flyball to right, but it was dropped by the right fielder, bringing home another run and putting the game-tying run on second with one out. However, Stillman failed to bring the run home before the end of the inning.

Rust added a pair of runs in the third and another one in the fourth to extend the lead to four, but the Tigers cut into the lead, thanks to a triple by Rehorn and a sacrifice fly from Wilkins to bring the deficit to three.

Keeping the Bobcats off the board in the fifth, Stillman started a two-out rally as Rives drew a walk to get a man on base. Rives then stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Daniel Salter drew a walk, and with KJ Mitchell running for him, he stole second to a pair in scoring position. But a groundout stranded both runners.

Later, the Bobcats scored runs in the next three innings, while holding Stillman to just three hits, to go on to win 10-3.

The Tigers go 2-1 on the weekend after taking the series yesterday afternoon, placing them in sole possession of second in the East division of the HBCUAC.

Stillman will take on NCAA D-II Miles College at home on Tuesday, March 24th, at 1:00 p.m.
