Baseball Defeats Oakwood to Sweep HBCUAC Series

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College baseball team used a big eighth inning to put away the pesky Oakwood University Ambassadors 15-7 Sunday afternoon to earn a sweep in the HBCU Athletic Conference series.

Kobe Lews used a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Devin Kelly to give the Tigers a short-lived early lead.

Oakwood scored runs in the second and third innings capped by an RBI double to left center by Tedrus Hamilton to give the Ambassadors a 2-1advantage.

Stillman answered with a run in the third on an RBI from Michael Glover, and scored two more in the fifth thanks to RBIs by Josh Wilson and Mehka Hicks to put the Tigers back on top 4-2.

Kyler Bradley tied the game at 4-4 for Oakwood when he used a double to left field to knock in two runs in the sixth.

However, in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers claimed the final lead change at 7-4 when Davion Wilkins cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to left field.

The Ambassadors closed the gap to 7-6 in the seventh capped by Treyvon Jones scoring on a passed ball.

Stillman responded in the seventh with Hicks scoring on a single from Lewis and a Griff Minor sacrifice fly to center brought in Lewis to move the lead to 9-6.

Joshua Mack notched the final RBI of the game for Oakwood in the eighth inning with a single to right field to move the score to 9-7.

The Tigers poured in the runs in the bottom of the eighth, starting with some smart base running from Wilkins who stole second and then advanced all the way home thanks to an errant throw by the catcher. Despite reaching first on an error, Kelly was credited with an RBI when his at-bat helped bring home Wilson.

Up 12-7, the scoring continued when Kelly scored on a wild pitch. Glover smacked a single to center to knock in Elijah Anderson, and Rober Gage capped the scoring with an RBI to bring in Minor as Stillman went up 15-7 which held as the final score.

Glover finished 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a walk. Wilkins knocked in three RBIs on 2-for-4 hitting with a double and a stolen base. Mehka Hicks turned in a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI, while Kobe Lewis went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and a walk.
