Baseball Powers by Oakwood for DH Sweep

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College baseball team had an objective to keep the late season winning streak alive and handled business with an HBCU Athletics Conference doubleheader sweep over the Oakwood University Ambassadors Friday at Tiger Field. The Tigers won game one 12-0 and the second contest 23-16.

GAME ONE - Stillman 12, Oakwood 0

Stillman scored early and often with two runs scored in the first inning capped by a sacrifice fly from Samuel Fleming

The Tigers scored a run in the second to push the lead to 3-0 before putting some distance between Oakwood and Stillman on the scoreboard with three runs in the third inning. 

In the fourth, the Tigers put the game away in the fourth with five runs capped by a bases-loaded walk to Kobe Lewis to bring Mehka Hicks home from third to reach the 12-0 final tally. 

Several Tigers finished with two RBIs in the contest led by a 2-for-3 effort from Mehka Hicks. Gavin Rehorn, Devin Kelly and Kobe Lewis registered two RBIs. Lewis posted a double, while Kelly, Hicks, Rehorn and Michael Moses all stole a base.

Griff Minor (6-3) pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts, while allowing a hit and walk in seven innings of work. 

GAME TWO - Stillman 23, Oakwood 12

Daniel Salter finished the second contest 1-for-2, but it was a big one as he blasted a solo homer in the third as part of a Stillman rally in the third inning. 

Oakwood jumped ahead 2-0 before the Tigers stormed back to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the first inning,

The Ambassadors then put together a six-run inning in the second to take an 8-4 advantage. 

Stillman rallied in the second and third including the two-run homer to close the gap to 8-7 in favor of Oakwood, however, the Ambassadors stretched the lead to 10-7 in the fourth. 

The Tigers responded with a massive 11-run bottom of the fourth capped by Thomas Stovall being hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to bring John Roland Jr. home and move the score to 18-10. 

Oakwood added one run in the fifth, but the Tigers extended the lead to 22-11 after another RBI from Salter. 

The sixth inning featured one run each for both teams with the Ambassadors scoring on a sacrifice fly and Stillman getting some smart base running from Stovall to move the score to 23-12. 

The score finished at 23-16 after Oakwood posted four runs in the top of the seventh to attempt a rally, but the Stillman defense secured the victory and the sweep of the day. 

Javian Rives finished with three RBIs and five runs scored on 2-for-3 hitting. Salter posted three RBIs and had a homer. Elijah Anderson went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a double and a triple. Tory Huddleston registered two RBIs and a triple with a 2-for-3 line. Robert Gage notched a double as well. Roland posted two stolen bases, while Michael Moses, Salter, Stovall and Gage all stole a base. 

Caleb Vallejo (2-1) earned the win in relief with two innings of work and a strikeout. Jaxon Pearson posted three strikeouts while pitching three innings in his start. Collin DuBose finished the final two innings. 

Stillman College and Oakwood return to action Sunday to conclude the weekend series with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
