TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College Softball team posted two separate innings of eight or more runs against the Dillard University Lady Bleu Devils, and the Lady Tigers showed a level of poise and used some power to earn the non-conference doubleheader victories Wednesday evening. Stillman took the first game 11-1 and won the second contest 9-1, with both games ending in five innings.
GAME ONE - Stillman 11, Dillard 1
Lily Stone put the first run on the board with a sacrifice bunt to bring in
Lauren Haskins.
Dillard responded with a sacrifice fly in the second inning as Ca'Terra Bates scored.
Both offenses went quiet until the faithful bottom of the fourth, where Stillman College exploded for 10 runs, starting with an RBI-single from Stone to bring in
Ariana Lopez.
Madison Bubel drew a bases-loaded walk as Haskins trotted in from third.
Karli Davidson smashed a two-RBI single as Bubel and
Carolyn Carter touched home.
The big inning continued after
Avary Lumpkin scored when
Alex Erwin reached on an error.
Katelyn Lankford got in on the action with a single to center field for two RBIs as Erwin and Davidson scored. Stone later drew a bases loaded walk, and Lankford scored on the play. Carter put the game on ice with a two-RBI single as Haskins and
Makyleigh Hollinger scored to reach the 11-1 final.
Stone managed to finish the contest 1-for-1 but drew two walks and notched three RBIs and a stolen base. Carter, Davidson and Lankford all notched two RBIs, while Haskins stole a pair of bases.
Jasmine Wade (5-1) pitched the complete game with three strikeouts.
GAME TWO - Stillman 9, Dillard 1
Neither the Tigers nor Bleu Devils scored until the bottom of the third, where Stillman's bats came alive. Davidson drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Carter. Erwin followed with another bases loaded walk as Bubel scored.
Lankford hit an RBI-single as Lumpkin touched home.
Gracie Fjeldstad reached on a fielder's choice as Davidson scooted in from third. Haskins then cleared the bases with a grand slam, scoring Fjeldstad, Lankford and Erwin to end the big inning with an 8-0 lead.
Dillard scored a run to avoid the shutout in the top of the fourth with an RBI-single to center field by Haley Weatherspoon.
Stillman responded in the bottom of the fourth when Ewrin hit a sacrifice fly to center to allow
Rachael Bowman to score and push the tally to 9-1, which held as the final score.
Haskins finished as the batting leader with a 1-for-4 effort, but the one was the game-breaking grand slam.
Faith Byram (4-5) threw the complete game with five strikeouts.
Stillman College returns to action and HBCU Athletic Conference countable contests on the road against Rust College on March 15. The Saturday doubleheader in Holly Springs, Mississippi, is set for a 2 p.m. start.
