Baseball Rally Falls Short to Harris-Stowe

FAIRFIELD, Ala. – The Stillman College baseball team scored four runs in the final two innings, but the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets provided enough offense to separate from the Tigers and come away with a 10-7 win Sunday morning on the final day of the Willie Mays Open.

The Hornets posted five runs in the second and third innings highlighted by a two-RBI single by Austin Martin in the second and a score on a wild pitch by Logan Schwerdt in the third to go up 5-0.

Stillman fought back with two runs in the bottom of the third when Gavin Rehorn scored on a throwing error, and Griff Minor followed with an RBI single to right field to score Mekha Hicks as the score moved to 5-2.

In the fourth, HSSU added three more runs as Skywalker Mann knocked a two-RBI double to left center and Schwerdt singled to center field.

The Tigers responded with three runs as Elijah Anderson scored on a dropped fly ball in the fourth. Then in the sixth, Devin Kelly scored on a throwing error followed by an RBI single through the right side from Michael Glover to bring in Hicks to bring the total to 8-5.

Harris-Stowe added two runs in the seventh thanks to a two-RBI single to center field by Jordan Bradley.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers posted one last rally with an RBI double to center field by Sieas Elliot to bring in Javian Rives.  Elliot later scored on an RBI single from Rehorn to move the score to 10-7. Unfortunately, Stillman could not push across anymore runs and took the loss to HSSU.

Minor, Glover, Elliot and Rehorn all posted RBIs for the Tigers, while Rehorn, Anderson and Minor all registered steals. Elliot finished 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored.

Issac Lopez went 3.1 innings in the start with three strikeouts, while giving up four hits, four walks and four earned runs. Xavier Reyna pitched 3.1 innings and struck out two batters. He surrendered eight hits, four earned runs and two walks.

Stillman College readies for HBCU Athletic Conference competition against Voorhees University with a doubleheader on February 14 scheduled to start at noon.
